Why PA
In addition to offering rewarding careers in public service, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also offers competitive pay, excellent medical benefits, generous time off and outstanding retirement benefits.
Because our workforce is so diverse, there are many combinations of benefits available—including options for part-time employees. In general, however, most permanent, full-time employees enjoy:
Health Insurance
Employees receive medical benefits from their first day on the job and can purchase optional coverage for their dependents. Family coverage is provided after six months, along with dental, vision, prescription drug and hearing aid benefits.
Commonwealth employees pay an average of $98.00 per month for health benefits, compared to the national average of about $230.00! Preferred provider organizations (PPO), health maintenance organizations (HMO) or a consumer-driven health plan (CDHP) are available to meet a range of cost and coverage needs.
Paid Time Off
Commonwealth employees enjoy 11 paid holidays throughout the year, in addition to personal, sick and vacation time, which increase with years of service.
Civil and military leave are also available and employees may take extended, unpaid absences for sickness, parental or family care and military reasons. Health benefits remain in place during many absences.
Retirement/Pension Benefits
The commonwealth’s pension plan provides retirees with a guaranteed level of income. An employee who works to full retirement with 35 years of service can expect to receive an annual pension equal to 70% of their final average salary.
Employees can further supplement their retirement savings through tax-advantaged deferred compensation.
Qualifying commonwealth retirees also continue to enjoy great medical and prescription drug benefits.
